A fitted sheet that keeps slipping off the corners is one of the most annoying things in the bedroom. Nine times out of ten, the pocket simply isn't deep enough for the mattress. Here's how to get it right first time.
How to measure mattress depth
- Take off all the bedding, including any topper or protector.
- Place a tape measure at the bottom edge of the mattress and measure straight up to the top surface.
- If you use a mattress topper, measure again with it on. That total is the depth your sheet needs to cover.
Which pocket depth do I need?
- Up to about 22cm – a standard 26cm fitted sheet will fit comfortably.
- About 23–27cm – go for a 30cm deep fitted sheet.
- About 28–36cm, or a mattress with a topper – you need an extra deep 40cm fitted sheet.
A few centimetres of extra pocket lets the elastic tuck right under the mattress, so the sheet stays put all night.
